Black Soldier Fly - 2005/11/14 10:25 This creature seems to cause more alarm to those new to vermicomposting. Although they are on the way out, with temperatures falling, they will be back and the posts will ramp up, when late spring comes, about "maggots taking over my bin!!" These days when I build bins with people, I have a small bin with these creatures in it and we take them out, handle, and discuss them. The phone calls don't come anymore about them because the people are familiar with what they are and what they do. SO.. Here is a great power point, well worth the read. Go through the slides and familiarize yourself with these terrific composters, that can eat massive amounts of raw OM and work in conjunction with your worms.

Re:Black Soldier Fly - 2005/11/15 01:34 Yep, these critters do a lot of good work for us during the warm months. I am seeing them dwindle down and the house flies are making their comeback until first frost. Kinda tickles your hand when you get a handful of these little critters. KuznLes

Re:Black Soldier Fly - 2005/11/15 05:46 Hi, Susan, what an innovative, smart, sales/marketing, consumer relations educational technique! Goood Job! It's folks like you who make the worm turn, lol. The black soldier fly is a wonderful creature who works wonders in a worm bin..they break food down quickly for the worms...what they excrete is wonderful worm food, and they're a really great panfish bait.
