 Michigan Winter Question - 2005/11/27 06:19 I have an old chest type freezer in a unheated barn- any ideas and/or suggestions as to how I can/should use it to keep my worms alive till Spring? Thanks!

 Re:Michigan Winter Question - 2005/11/27 15:46 Hello, I also live in MI. I made a plywood box and lined it with 1 inch foam board. I heat it with a 60 watt light bulb. Refrigerators are pretty well insulated so maybe a bulb with less wattage. You really have to monitor it because you could overheat your worms. Did you check the temp the other day when the temps were in the 20's? It might be staying warm on its own. Or at least above freezing. Some heat with raw food scrap piles in their bins. So far it hasn't worked for me. I think we may be to cold up here in the great white north. You will have to try a few different things to see what works for you. Stay warm. Tom

 Re:Michigan Winter Question - 2005/12/01 00:31 I am not in a region as cold as yours, but a couple of years ago I had an old drink box with worms in it. I put a piece of plastic over the top of it and I put a 25 watt light bulb into a 3 pound coffee can and buried most of the can in the bedding. The bedding was paper and leaves with a very small amount of peat moss. I didn't pay much attention to it but did throw some food in every now and then and I checked about once a week to make sure the bulb had not burned out. Finally about the end of March I decided to move the box and when I started digging around, I found large numbers of nice fat worms. Not only did they survive, they multiplied and that box wasn't even in a shed, it was sitting out under the trees. KuznLes
