Place your bets.. 10 worms in a box, how many... - 2008/02/05 15:54 Just placed 10 adult red wigglers in a 2 foot long, 18 inch wide, 18 deep rubber maid container. Its filled with 25% shredded newspaper, and 75% horse manure.(also a little bit of wood shavings I couldnt separate when shoveling. Nothing more will be added except for water when needed.

Anyone wanna take a guess how many worms will be in the box in 2 months?

yeah, i know 2 months is a long time to wait, but since most of you are daily visitors to the forums here, I figure ya'll would be around in 2 months for the results lol.

Box will be sifted through on April 5th and results will be posted.

Re:Place your bets.. 10 worms in a box, how many.. - 2008/02/05 17:33 Their would be exactly 10 adults. Around 50 to 200 juvies. And around 50 unhatched eggs. It's Black Gold!! It's Squirmy Tea!!

Re:Place your bets.. 10 worms in a box, how many.. - 2008/02/05 20:02 Hmm. That's a lot of real estate for 10 worms to get through in search of that special other, 'specially with a faceful of chow everywhere they turn.
I'll call it much lower than v-man: I expect your original 10 will be dandy, but think you'll be hard-pressed to find more than a dozen cocoons in all that bedding. Hope I'm wrong.
You have much more patience than I for this sort of experiment, I think . I'll be interested to hear your results though.

Re:Place your bets.. 10 worms in a box, how many.. - 2008/02/06 00:49 The ten worm should produce at least 1 egg capsule each per week. For 2 months I guesstimated 100, remember the words "at least". After two months half should of hatched 1 - 4 worms each.

50 times (1 - 4) = (50 - 200) juvies

And this is if they can find each other enough to be able to breed at least once a week. If not the numbers could be drastically reduced.

Re:Place your bets.. 10 worms in a box, how many... - 2008/02/06 01:46 None. I don't think that 10 worms will thrive.

Re:Place your bets.. 10 worms in a box, how many... - 2008/02/06 09:41 The fact that you put in adults some have already have mated. If worm are like other animals they become aggressive when its time to mate so finding a mate is do or die not a happen stance.(my opinion)
To be conservative and betting on your diligents.

Re:Place your bets.. 10 worms in a box, how many... - 2008/02/10 03:15 fourmares may be right yetwrong the ten wormes probly won't make it,( because of new enviroment/bedding) but being adult they may lay eggs before death off spring probly will make it if it don't heat up to much ,which it will heat. my question who's doing the counting We don't necessarily need to save the world , it will survive in spite of us .WE is what we need to save !!!
