Jet Compost Harvester - 2008/02/05 21:51Hello everybody,I found this site looking for worms, found alot on E-Bay. Got some worms, and now I want to build a composter harvester kind a , like the jet, well almost This is my first post, like nobody could tell..ok here's my quest, what I'am looking for is the motor size that is on the jet harvester model 2410 , and the RPM's it turns at ? I found the motors and gear drives at Graingers, I just don't know what rpm it turns and the motor size ?
Thanks for the help in advance.
Oh, I'am sure glad somebody got a web site for worms..
I know that's alot for the first post.

Re:Jet Compost Harvester - 2008/02/06 11:07We built our own worm shaker. Not exactly like a Jet but we use an old washing machine motor. It is probably a 1/2 hp and we set it to the spin cycle setting and use pulleys to control the rpms... Hope that helps.Dave Wallace Squirmin' Worm Farm Plymouth, WI www.squirminwormfarm.com

Re:Jet Compost Harvester - 2008/02/06 16:09Just out of curiosity, how many pounds of worms did you buy? Unless it was enough to stock a farm, going to all the trouble to build a motorized harvester may be more trouble than it's worth. For a small operation, a medimum sized frame with a screen on the bottom & a wheelbarrow may be more in line.
I have 20+ pounds and built a small drum screener to screen both my vermicompost and my 4 compost piles. But my small screening frame works just as well for small loads.
Best of luck with your worms. We Are WORM - Resistance Is Futile! Buddy Richmond, VA

That's kind a what I had in mind, 1/2hp. with pulley reduction. My question is at what rpm does it need to run 5,10,20, rpm's or is that to slow ?
Great Idea squirm........thanks.

I have 2-lbs. now + 3 more lbs Monday shipping. And as soon as I get them setteled in to the herd, I'am going to get 5-lbs.more in about 2 weeks.
I farm 2.5 acres mostly Purplehull Peas and Sweet Corn Last year I picked 135 bushels of peas . That's a lot of hulls, for compost.
My thinking was to try and save time on harvesting , speed up the process time.
Thank you for the help.
I didn't want to sling the guts out of the worms when I turned on the harvester...

Re:Jet Compost Harvester - 2008/02/07 11:00Well as I said the motor was used. I would guess around after our reduction it is probably about 100-120 rpm's. I used to do appliance parts and I think the motor is rated at about 2000 rpm's. It is a work in progress still tweaking it, but it does git-it-dun...

Re:Jet Compost Harvester - 2008/02/24 02:14ello guys. What screens do you use ? Are they available in hardware shops? I live in Ireland and the cost of shipping and buying a harvester is too much, so I'm going to build my own. If it works well enough, who knows? Might even try selling them. There's a market for them in Ireland and the UK.George Co. Armagh Northern Ireland "we're Not Brasil....."
