redworms and winter - 2005/12/11 14:40 I put 2lbs of redworms in my garden this summer/fall. It freezes here and we will get aleast a couple of feet of snow here over the winter. I have a little but of mulch on my garden, but not enough to keep the ground from freezing. Will they survive the cold winter and reappear in the spring? Does a redworm hibernate or go dormant or do they just die. Thanks in advance. Norm

Re:redworms and winter - 2006/02/23 13:49 my suggestion would be to add a foot or more of fluffed hay or straw extending out from the sides of the worm bed area a few feet from what ive read if the worm freezes the chance of survival is next to none but very cold is ok they just slow down. perhaps someone has more ideas FEED IT TO THE WORMS

Re:redworms and winter - 2006/02/26 08:56 Norm, it's doubtful E.fetida would survive, however there should be egg capsules hatching in warmer weather.
You'd be better off using E.hortensis (European nightcrawlers)in gardens, lawns or flower beds, as they will go deeper if need be, and survive better there in the summer as well. Seeya, Bob
