Fair Trade for Horse Manure - 2008/02/28 13:50 This hasn't come up yet, but might in the future. Hoping to get some horse manure this weekend from some folks on the other side of town. If some one should ask about a fair trade of manure for vc, what would you say would be a fair shake for both of us?

Basicly, what would 100 gal of horse poop be worth in pounds of vc?

Thanks,

Re:Fair Trade for Horse Manure - 2008/02/28 15:35 I'd low ball them, and not just cause i'm a cheap SOB.
Your doing them a favor by taking it off their hands and disposing of it for them. while tending your worms and harvesting VC takes up time and energy.

Agreed..

The people I get my Horse manure from, first looked at me weird when i asked, then said "take all the f'ing horse s*** you want"

Unless they have some use for the manure that we're not aware of, I wouldnt give up much of my castings to them at all lol.

Re:Fair Trade for Horse Manure - 2008/02/28 20:05 Have you seen their homestead? IF they're gardeners, I'd pack up and give 'em a gallon or two when you go to load up, and provide application instructions. If they're not gardeners, I'd ask if they'd like some for houseplants or such anyway. That's just being nice.
I'm with AKRN and RITLV; if they wanted it, they wouldn't be giving it away.
Y'all have fun, whatever you're doing.

Re:Fair Trade for Horse Manure - 2008/02/28 20:31 Maybe if they are shoveling it, and going out of their way to deliver it to you I'd be a bit more generous. Just dont let them know how much your worms like it or they'll start charging you for it. Jeremy

Re:Fair Trade for Horse Manure - 2008/02/29 00:42 I wouldn't say anything to them most folks with horses would gladly give you the manure for free.. when I go for horse manure I bring a small garbage can with about 10 garbage cans bags & my pitch fork.. one day I forgot to bring the garbage can but I brought the bags & the fork & let me tell you it was a hummer trying to hold the bag open with one hand & the other hand had the fork with the manure.. I stopped everything & went home & got the garbage can.. just put the bag into the can & fill up the bags.. it's so easy when you bring the right tools.. Slim

Re:Fair Trade for Horse Manure - 2008/02/29 09:45 The 3 different people that I get it from have to haul it to the dump and pay to get rid of it. It is against the law to dump it anywhere where it might wash into a creek, which is about anywhere. I figure a fair price would be for me to just take it for free and not charge them anything!

Re:Fair Trade for Horse Manure - 2008/03/01 23:33 Trust me, they'll be happy to give it to you for nothing... but if you want to be a good neighbor bring them a few pounds of compost to exchange. I give my horse manure away to anyone who'll take it... but I have to admit that the guy that brought me cuttings off his plants had a special place in my heart.
