Re:How much do you charge for castings?? - 2008/03/02 06:59That really depends on if you will be selling by weight or by volume, the quality, and how finely screened your castings are. If it were screened with 1/2", I would charge less than castings screened to 1/4 or 1/8".
When I was first asked to sell some of mine, I found the only place in this area to buy castings was at the big nursary stores. There, they were charging around $5 per gallon bag. It was finely screened, and of good quality. So, I sold mine for the same price.
Some offer vc for sale by the lb, and I can only see that being fair to the consumer if the material is dry.
Good luck with your sales...

Re:How much do you charge for castings?? - 2008/03/03 13:12Im curious myself. The day I began my worm production, I had someone ask for the first 100 pounds of castings. I told them it would be a while, but they said it was fine. 100 pounds seems like alot of castings, just not sure how much to charge for them all

Re:How much do you charge for castings?? - 2008/03/03 22:28I'm going to touch on one of my other hobbies to make a point .That is prospecting . Question : How much is gold worth ? Well , it depends . If you are selling the dust and really small pieces you will get a large portion of what is called "spot".That is the price in the paper . If you are able to make stuff with it and sell wholesale you will get more . If you make stuff AND set up a place to sell you will get the most . My point is that it seems that there is money in the tea that you make with the air . You can make about 3 1/2 gallons with a pound and a half of castings . The castings still have a large amount of good stuff left in it for personal use . The market for castings being , let's say $5 a pound , you would get $7.50 for that amount . Now the big question :What could you get for 3 1/2 gallons of aerated tea when bottled in let's say quarts ? That's 14 units that can be diluted to the customers needs . Even if you got $5 a quart there's $70 in your hand AND good castings for you to use also . Now that seems a market to pursue . If it were me the following would apply . First : The castings that I need for my greenhouse that feeds me and my wife . Second : aerated tea sales to those that really want good results in gardening or flower enthusiasts . Third : Casting sales to outlets . Fourth : The used castings could have a market having told the customer that they have been stripped of SOME of their magic BUT still retain much more that the manure that you buy at Home Depot . It seems that if you are going to the trouble to create the finest product that there is you can surely expend a bit more effort to develop a market that reflects the true quality of your product . The entire cost of all the stuff you need to make the aerated tea will be more than returned on the first load . My stuff is "kinda" like the following numbers . Aquarium pump $15 , air lines $3 , air stones (2 one inch and 2 five inch) about $5 , clean 5 gallon bucket $5 , bag from paint store to hold the castings during the "bubble process" 75 cents .A gallon of Soil Soup costs $32 or so and will last a long time OR if you have access to pond water and also use some corn syrup there is a very small amount of money there and that eliminates the Soil Soup . Total ? About $30 . And that includes the miniscule amount of electricity to do the whole "bubble" deal .Any imput ?Tom Kingman Arizona

Re:How much do you charge for castings?? - 2008/03/03 22:41I'm not familiar with 'soil soup'. What is it? I do have access to pond water. Are you saying that using pond water with corn syrup makes a better tea? Interesting stuff.********* Worm Chick Summitville, Indiana
