Any one have experience with these suppliers? - 2008/02/18 02:02 Has anyone ordered Euros from Vermico out of Oregon or Vermitechnology Unlimited out of Florida? *********

Re:Any one have experience with these suppliers? - 2008/02/18 08:46 Where you at Michelle? Haven't used either of those companies, but I did just order Euro's.

http://carolinapetsupply.com/

is where I just got mine. Had a shipping problem at first, but that was USPS's fault. The supplier stayed in contact thru e-mail and reshipped when the weather got nicer. I didn't weigh them out or anything, but it looked like a good 2 lbs. I was happy, the worms were healthy and spread out in the bin in a day or two.

Good luck!

Re:Any one have experience with these suppliers? - 2008/02/18 11:59 Thanks for the info, Mark. I'm in Indiana so it's a little risky ordering right now anyway. Vermico wont ship to me till Spring but Vermitechnology Unlimited is sending me 3#. I'll post again when I get them and let you know how it turned out. I'll check out the site you recommended. *********

Re:Any one have experience with these suppliers? - 2008/02/18 17:34 Thanks, Larry! I'm a little nervous ordering this time of year in Indiana. My squirm shipped priority today from Florida. Keeping my fingers crossed... *********

Re:Any one have experience with these suppliers? - 2008/02/18 18:02 You could stop by your PO and give them a 'heads up'. A face-to-face with somebody in charge can make a difference. My local folks are pretty good about making a call for pick-up (after a hiccup or two), and my regular carrier has brought 'em to the door.
Caveat: I'm a bit rural, so my local PO doesn't see the volume of mail an urban PO does... .
Regardless, hope your herd gets to ya healthy and ready to work.

Re:Any one have experience with these suppliers? - 2008/02/18 19:29 I have had dealings with both companies.

I would never recommend vermico to anyone for anything.

Vermitechnology Unlimited is just the opposite, they are great. If they tell you something you can count on it.

Just my opinion,

Re:Any one have experience with these suppliers? - 2008/02/18 19:59 I guess I should be glad that Vermico wouldn't ship to me! Thanks for the heads up on them. I'm hoping Verm. Unlimited works out well for me.

I'm pretty rural, too. You know where 'everybody knows your name'! I think I'll call the post office tomorrow and let them know my babies are on the way.

Do you guys think I should split the 3# between 2 or 3 of the 18 gallon rubbermaids?

Re:Any one have experience with these suppliers? - 2008/02/18 23:15 Michelle,

You should be in good shape as long as your bins are inside. I am in Wisconsin and keep my crews all heated.

I would take Gary's advice, grab a beer or glass of wine, and start getting things ready. You'll want your bins all set up when you get your new friends arrive. That way they can move right in get, get unpacked, and head of dinner and work!

Let us know when they get there...

Re:Any one have experience with these suppliers? - 2008/02/22 15:44 Yeah! They made it! Three pounds of Euros arrived this morning from Florida. I couldn't have picked a worse time to order worms to be shipped to Indiana! We have about 5 inches of snow right now with a little freezing rain thrown in for good measure. Anyway, the mailman delivered them to my door this morning. They were pretty cold and not moving around much. I had three bins prepared for them and once they warmed up a bit they hunkered down in the bedding. I checked on them a few hours later and they were already hitting the food pile.
So far my experience with Larry at Vermitechnology has been a good one. My three pounds cost $68.90 delivered. I expect to order more in the Spring.

Re:Any one have experience with these suppliers? - 2008/02/23 02:54 Hi All,
I'm from Northern Ireland , posting for the first time.
Michelle, if you keep your "Euros" warm enough, in the spring, you'll have enough to set up many more beds/bins.
I'm increasing my stocks at the moment, getting ready to open the doors for business, but I reckon this year to concentrate on castings sales as we had a big year last year for production.
Keep up the good work!

Re:Any one have experience with these suppliers? - 2008/02/23 17:16 Just an update...the Euros are really rockin'! One bin was started with just shredded office paper and newspaper, the other two have the paper along with some dried leaves and trimmings from plants. I only put about 1/4 cup of pureed food in each one. The worms in all bins were working it this morning. They did warm up a bit so I took the lids off and parially blocked the furnace vent in the laundry room. They cooled off quickly. All is well.

Yes, Mark....by Spring I should have lots of Euros. I hope to sell a few pounds when I give vermicomposting programs but I want to keep a good stock for myself for the castings. I belong to a couple of garden clubs so I've got a good customer base for the castings and tea. Besides....there's always room for one more pound!

Re:Any one have experience with these suppliers? - 2008/03/04 22:33 Slim-I'm sorry, I just now saw your question. I won't be making tea until it warms up here in Indiana but when i do, I'm hoping to get $4 gallon. I guess I'll just have to see what the demand is and go from there. I'm going to use the home made brewer with a 5 gallon bucket and air stones. Haven't decided about adding molassis when brewing.

Kyle-Vermitechnology definately has my business. My squirm is doing great. I figure if they can safely get 3# to me in the dead of winter they know what they're doing! Good luck to ya'!

Re:Any one have experience with these suppliers? - 2008/03/06 20:25 Michelle you have to use the mollasses. The sugars feed the microbes. Try it youll be amazed.

Re:Any one have experience with these suppliers? - 2008/03/07 20:53 Thanks, Kyle. How much do you add? Do you put it in when you start brewing or sometime later? *********

Re:Any one have experience with these suppliers? - 2008/03/08 08:57 Michelle I put 1 to 2 tablespoons. You can add it after all set up is done. The mixture will foam. This is a good reaction. Makes the tea so much better.
