Idea that might hep continuous flow systems - 2008/03/16 21:57 One problem with continuous flow systems is where to store compost materials to pre-compost them before adding to the worms.

I suggest a series of trays. Go up!

This applies more to larger systems, though for very small systems the trays could be manually lifted.

Trays are the size of your continuous flow system, or modular according to scale, and they clip together. Wire on frames would work.

Say you pre-compost for 4 days before feeding to worms. you then want 5 trays.

The top tray is the lid.
Then under it is 1 day old compost
2 day old
3 day old
4 day old
The bottom layer, the compost now added to the worm farm, becomes the lid.

How?

The trays all clipped together are lifted as one unit. By unclipping one side of the bottom tray lifting it will tip all the compost within onto the worm farm where it can be raked flat. The other side of this tray, once free of compost, is then unclipped and removed. The remaining trays are lowered, and the base is now the lid.

You would of course need something to lift the trays, many different applications will present themselves for this according to environment. Winch off a roof probably the easiest if structurally doable. Couple of jacks or 4 hefty Joes would work too.

Done already? Thoughts?

Re:Idea that might hep continuous flow systems - 2008/03/17 15:11 Ok I'm brand new to vermiculture.

The can o worms is a layer system, like a continuous flow? The trays in my idea are not part of the worm farm - they are pre compost - I don't know the can o worms is that what they do?

Basically the idea is to have existing continuous flow design and just add the trays on top for pre-composting food, clips to clip them together, and something to lift them with.

Re:Idea that might hep continuous flow systems - 2008/03/17 17:51 I think I need a picture.

i think I get what you mean, but i just use a 5 gallon bucket. I guess I could use 7 of them. One for each day of the week, and just dump one bucket worth a day.

Re:Idea that might hep continuous flow systems - 2008/03/18 16:24 I pre-compost in a wind row system, outside, because i have the room and need a lot of food.
But I see where you're going.
Not sure about the layout.

Re:Idea that might hep continuous flow systems - 2008/03/19 02:32 The continuous flow system is a long rectangular box.

The frames would be the same size as the worm system and sit on top. They take space vertically, but won't require more land for pre-composting.

As the continuous flow top feeds you need to lift the frames to add the feed. Clipping them together does this in one operation. Having clips also allows the bottom frame to be partially unclipped so as the frames are lifted the bottom frame tips and composted materials fall into the continuous flow system. Clear remaining compost from the frame and then remove it.

The start of the daily 'feed' would be to add food to the top frame, then lift the pile and feed the bottom frame, and this is then put on the top.

Did that help?

Re:Idea that might hep continuous flow systems - 2008/03/26 16:02 Has any one tried the Vermitopia www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~compost/binplans.html
continuous diagram / plans yet. I'm from Cape Town and struggling to convert the inches and feet to millimeters. Any one that have the plans in millimeters or centimeters? That would be a great help. I'm currently busy converting a 210 liter plastic bin into a continuous flow system with steel rods at the bottom. Found the idea at http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/the_worm_bin/photos/browse/86da
you have to register, but it only takes a minute or 2. It is also an online worm forum.

The berkeley oscr type of flow thru is made out of wood and will deterioate in about 3 years or so, thats why folks are using alternative materials.

12 inches= 304.79999999999995 mm. its all on the internet

Are you a gardener of sorts whats the reason you need castings? Just curious your in a dynamic diverse spot of the world. TE
