what am I doing wrong - 2008/03/28 09:32 My sons sold enough lemon aid last year to buy a pound of ENs. They were to be bait size for fishing. When they arrived they were thin and small. We were disappointed but the vendor said it will take time to fatten them up. So we have been taking care of them for a year. Used them for composting and science fairs. They are reproducing but they aren't getting any longer than a red worm. I've seen pictures of red worms next to ENs and noticed the difference in size. Last night I measured the longest one in the bin. It measured 2 inches.
My sons wanted to sell the worms and use them for fishing but after a year of saying "they aren't ready yet" they are losing interest.
Is there a way I can tell the difference between a red worm and EN?

Sorry for the long post.

Re:what am I doing wrong - 2008/03/28 12:20 How big of a bin do you have those worms in?
Do you notice an increase in population?

Re:what am I doing wrong - 2008/03/28 13:01 The bin is 3 foot long x 11 inches deep x 10 inches wide. The population seems to be growing because there are a lot of little ones but not a lot of big ones.
It's not over crowed because they are only living in the half where the food is. The other half is paper bedding with a few that are napping. Still I was thinking of building a bigger bin this weekend.
The herd is all red, some of the web sites show them as having stripes. Should they have stripes?

Thanks..

Another thought - my BK Whopper never looks like the ones on TV either .
Y'all have fun, whatever you're doing.

Re:what am I doing wrong - 2008/03/29 09:50 Sounds like you have redworms. Encs are much bigger.

Re:what am I doing wrong - 2008/03/29 11:19 Some pics might help, but my first impression is that if you really did get ENC's not Reds is that it might be crowded. A pound of Euro's in the original bin, reproducing well, and seem healthy, are probably getting cramped. Dave Wallace

Is that bin see-through? It is not very wide. After a year you are still only feeding half of the bin?
That would make the worms stay where the food is, making the bin area smaller, and more crowded. Crowded worms stay smaller. (Like if you want a bigger goldfish...get a bigger bowl.)
When I raised ENC's I put them in bins that were deeper than the redworm bins. They were also kept a bit wetter and cooler.

Re:what am I doing wrong - 2008/03/29 21:21 I will try and up load some photos later.
The bin is made of used oak wood flooring. I am only feeding half at this time because I cleaned out the black gold on one side.
Thanks...

Re:what am I doing wrong - 2008/04/03 11:23 After talking with the kids getting the wife's permission we decided to buy some more ENs.
Will it be ok to mix ENs with (what I am assuming I have) red worms?
Hey the more the merrier right?
The amount of worms that I have now aren't keeping up with the weekly waste and the freezer is getting full.

Correct!
They will all get along just fine.

Re:what am I doing wrong - 2008/04/04 22:30 If you are planning to sell the worms you may not want to mix them
