Can you use color news paper print? - 2008/03/28 21:27 New to farming worms and i was wondering if colored news print is bad for the worms? Someone had told me not to use colored paper. I know that some of the inks they use are soy based dyes, does that make a differance. I don't want to screw this up and accidentally murder my worms. Any feed back appreciated. Thank you. Re:Can you use color news paper print? - 2008/03/28 21:50 Welcome to the squirm, TWF.
I use my local paper's colored pages and haven't seen any problems. They're all veggie ink, so they tell me.
Call your newspaper and ask what they use for ink. If they can't (or won't) tell ya, I wouldn't use it in a bin.
If you need a paper supply for bedding, they may be willing to give up their roll-ends, un-inked. They cain't say anything worse than no, eh?
Y'all have fun, whatever you're doing.

Re:Can you use color news paper print? - 2008/03/28 22:10 Gary, thanks for the post. I guess I was wondering because the guy I get my paper from is seperating out the color for me. But he charges me to do that. I'm not worried about the money but I thought It would make his job easier if he didn't have to do it. I also have another question for you or anyone that might know, how easy is it to raise Leafs and Angles? What do I need to do to breed either? Thanks TWF T Worm Farms

Re:Can you use color news paper print? - 2008/03/29 09:48 Colored newsprint is fine. I personaly do not use the glossy paper. There may be some chemicals on that type of paper. I also have been told it is slow to break down.

Yes all ink is soy based now. No worries...

Re:Can you use color news paper print? - 2008/03/29 13:24 I also use the colored newsprint but I don't use the glossy 'ad' pages. A couple pages of the glossy got put in one of my bins during a school presentation and they didn't break down well. *********

I work as a press operator and as far as I know there are no heavy metals in ink anymore.

I would not be very concerned about the colored paper. The only ink that might not be the best for your bin would be petroleum based or magnetic ink(usually only found on checks). Most web presses( used mainly for printing newspapers) operators are using soy or vegetable based ink.

Re:Can you use color news paper print? - 2008/04/17 21:54 Thanks Mike. I do believe the glossy does not break down tho. I use the funnies as long as its regular newsprint.
