 worm feed???? - 2008/03/31 18:50 I am so excited. Found some great pricing on feed.
I found 50 pound bags of rabbit feed for 7.99. I also found 50 pound bags of chick feed for 11.49.

One thing that intrigued me. The rabbit feed has a better nutrient list. Also the price is lower. What is best?

You should be aware that chicken mash has salts in it and when used as feedstock exclusively over time can build a salty bin and kill your worms. Susan Quinby-Honer

redhen the salt is low as a total percentage. The rabbit feed is a better deal any how. About the same salt percentage. I havent killed any worms yet. lol.

I don't imagine WFike was trying to squash your enthusiasm, just pointing out that you can get the same result without paying for it beyond some sweat equity.
I think, much like cattle ranchin', the herd doesn't need (or benefit from) fattening until it's time to prep for market. I ain't selling, so that's just MHO. Y'all have fun, whatever you're doing.

I just know that once upon a time, I found how easy it was to feed chicken mash and the worms loved it.
As a little time went by, I noticed my worms getting smaller, slower and then...poof!
I talked with some other growers and they informed me that over time, salt will build up in the bin and do my worms in.
So...Like all other things in a worm bin..it is about balance and diversity.
I still throw some mash in, maybe once every month or so. Susan Quinby-Honer

The Hen lady is spot on too.
Too much salt there but ok for a treat. Bit like us, really.

I am learning. The plan I have for my worm bins. I am going to run on a 6 to 8 week schedule. With worm fattner at the last 2 weeks.

Then harvest castings. Start the cycle over.

My goal is fat worms to sell and castings to harvest.

I use 14% creep pellets,calf feed. paper,1/3 feed 1/3 leaves 1/3 water to cover soak 24 plus mix well then feed . We don't necessarily need to save the world , it will survive in spite of us .WE is what we need to save !!!

 Re:worm feed???? - 2008/04/17 17:12 I have used rabbit feed and chicken feed. I was told by a worm farmer(over 15 years) that the rabbit feed was a better choice because of the alfalfa. Worms seem to like them both. I personally like to use rabbit or cow manure because it is cheaper. These IMO grow bigger worms faster. I wouldn't be overly concerned about salts, as it takes time to build up enough to kill your worms. Chances are that you will change bedding before this happens.
