Kelp as a Food Source - 2008/04/02 16:33
I've been given around 60kg of kelp paste (pulverized for the extraction of the juice for the fertilizer industry).
As it is in a paste form, it is fairly wet, around 85 - 90%.
pH is around 4.6 according to the plant manager.

The kelp was properly cleaned of all salts prior to it being mulched and then pulverized.
Should I try to raise the pH, and what should I use? I would like not to mix it with any other food source though to see what the results would be like.

Ideas, thoughts and advice needed. If it works, then I can get a free supply of 60kg daily, 7 days a week!.

Re:Kelp as a Food Source - 2008/04/02 21:07 I imagine the worms will find that right tasty, but I would be very careful about all that moisture being intro'd into a bin environment.
As for the pH concern, I think if you balance it with other feedstock it'd be a non-issue.
Regardless, I'd experiment with small intros before shovelling it all in there.
What is your setup - worms, bins, bedding...?
Y'all have fun, whatever you're doing.

Re:Kelp as a Food Source - 2008/04/03 05:40 I don't know about adding it to the bin but I've been reading that adding kelp to the tea brew can help feed the beneficial microbes in the brew. I'm not sure about kelp paste but it's kelp nonetheless.

Bin 1: Added some kelp on the one side, after 24 hours none appeared close to it. Day 2: This afternoon I found a hand full of worms underneath and they seem to like it.

Bin 2: Here I stirred some into the top of the castings (not many worms here. Did not check on day one. Day 2 and hundreds of worms in this section right now, especially the babies.
