Goat manure - 2008/04/11 23:30 When I went to buy my first worms I gave the fella about 20 pounds of goat manure and asked him to try it . He said they wouldn't touch it when he put it in the bin . He then e-mailed me and said that he washed it and now they devour it . He said that he put it in a 5 gallon bucket and wet it good . Then he poured it into a bucket with 1/2 inch holes in it and wet it again and let it drain . He did this 2 or 3 more times and fed it to them . He says that they love it now . Anyone else ever "wash" goat manure like that ??? Tom

Re:Goat manure - 2008/04/12 06:30 I'm never Purposely washed goat manure, however, if you just leave it out in the rain. It does the same thing I noticed the same phenomenon here having the worms in the house beside it stunk to high heavens of strong urine. I had to bury it in the middle of the bed, and you right the worms still didn't like it. Until the urine smell was gone FEED IT TO THE WORMS

Re:Goat manure - 2008/04/12 13:21 We rinse the horse manure before feeding it to the worms. We use big trash bins with wheels, put a few holes in the bottom, fill and drain a couple times before it is ready to be fed to the worms.

I think there is too much ammonia and salts in the manure. The worms really go after it once it is rinsed.

It is fun to go out the next night after putting new feed, and lift the road apples to see how many worms have their little heads buried in there LOL.

Re:Goat manure - 2008/04/13 02:58 Way to much trouble for me. I toss the horse manure in the bin straight out of the stall. If I had to soak it in water first for the worms to eat it, I'd turn the worms loose... I do spray the bins with the hose occassionally, depending on the weather.
