whitish specks - 2008/03/24 22:23 Several days ago I noticed tiny whitish specks throughout my bin.Two weeks ago I added shredded newpaper and brown paper bags(my bedding is peat moss)Could they be the materials decomposing?I see the shredded bags also get quite stringy.I hope they arent some kind of bug eggs.I did go on the worm bin group and look at pics there. It seemed almost everyone had what I'm seeing in my bin.Last week I began seeing cocoons!!My worms are now of a good size and my bin seems quite active.
thanks Chana

Re:whitish specks - 2008/04/12 15:21 i copied this from annother site thought some might be interested in the results
she bought at Home Depot

lady bugs . I didn't read the COMPLETE directions and let them go at duskand most flew away. Directions (in my case corrections) said dark. I
made the trip back to Home Depot and got three more bags and waited
until it was totally dark out and headed out to release my bugs on the
collards, kale and turnips. Today they were also all over the squash
and other plants.

While working this morning in the garden I have never seen such work
being done by the ladies. They are incredible. I had a problem with
affids and was tired of having to do intense cleaning of our greens.

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH WORMS ? I HAVE WHITE MITES AN THOUGHT OTHERS MIGHT WANT TO HAVE A SOURCE FOR LADYBUGS

Re:whitish specks - 2008/04/14 01:55 I think that Wellsworm was assuming that the white specks were moving and were therefore mites. She further assumed that they were mites and was suggesting that ladybugs might be employed to eat the mites.

If the white specks are not moving they are probably mold or mildew and just what the worms ordered.

Re:whitish specks - 2008/04/24 01:33 Hi
I have just become a member of this forum.
Could the white specks be springtails?

Re:whitish specks - 2008/04/24 22:32 Hi all.I figure the specks must be mold or decomposing material. They dont move, they didnt hatch(I was worried they were eggs of some sort).anyway they are much less in number and the worms are happy and multiplying.
thanks for the help,
Chana
