worm feed???? - 2008/03/31 18:50 I am so excited. Found some great pricing on feed.
I found 50 pound bags of rabbit feed for 7.99. I also found 50 pound bags of chick feed for 11.49.

One thing that intrigued me. The rabbit feed has a better nutrient list. Also the price is lower. What is best?

Re:worm feed???? - 2008/03/31 23:05 cardboard, newspaper, junkmail, old leaves, compost, horse doody, cow doody, computer paper, garden waste, grass clippings, hay, etc. are all better because they are free!

Re:worm feed???? - 2008/04/01 13:28 I agree with WFike.
You should be aware that chicken mash has salts in it and when used as feedstock exclusively over time can build a salty bin and kill your worms.

Re:worm feed???? - 2008/04/01 19:35 Wow talk about throwing cold water on someone. LOL.

I am using all of the above. However I want to fatten my worms up also.

redhen the salt is low as a total percentage. The rabbit feed is a better deal any how. About the same salt percentage. I havent killed any worms yet. lol.

Thankyou for your point of view.

Towel off, Kyle .
I don't imagine WFike was trying to squash your enthusiasm, just pointing out that you can get the same result without paying for it beyond some sweat equity.
I think, much like cattle ranchin', the herd doesn't need (or benefit from) fattening until it's time to prep for market. I ain't selling, so that's just MHO.
Y'all have fun, whatever you're doing.

Re:worm feed???? - 2008/04/01 21:51 Kyle..I have never used rabbit feed.
I just know that once upon a time, I found how easy it was to feed chicken mash and the worms loved it.
As a little time went by, I noticed my worms getting smaller, slower and then...poof!
I talked with some other growers and they informed me that over time, salt will build up in the bin and do my worms in.
So...Like all other things in a worm bin..it is about balance and diversity.
I still throw some mash in, maybe once every month or so.

Re:worm feed???? - 2008/04/02 14:12 Both are fine if you water (wet) the bed first and sprinkle a little on top.
The Hen lady is spot on too.
Too much salt there but ok for a treat. Bit like us, really.
Happy experimenting.
Just noticed the time difference, again.
I'm at home, with dinner in me and you guys are probably still working......

Re:worm feed???? - 2008/04/02 18:52 Thankyou for your input. I love contrusctive advice.
I am learning. The plan I have for my worm bins. I am going to run on a 6 to 8 week schedule. With worm fattner at the last 2 weeks.

Then harvest castings. Start the cycle over.

My goal is fat worms to sell and castings to harvest.

Re:worm feed???? - 2008/04/11 23:13 They might have salt .but would not most of the processed food scraps that were cooked should of probably have salt also would they not??
I use 14% creep pellets, calf feed. paper,1/3 feed 1/3 leaves 1/3 water to cover soak 24 plus mix well then feed .
We don't necessarily need to save the world , it will survive in spite of us .WE is what we need to save !!!

Re:worm feed???? - 2008/04/17 17:12 I have used rabbit feed and chicken feed. I was told by a worm farmer(over 15 years) that the rabbit feed was a better choice because of the alfalfa. Worms seem to like them both. I personally like to use rabbit or cow manure because it is cheaper. These IMO grow bigger worms faster. I wouldn't be overly concerned about salts, as it takes time to build up enough to kill your worms. Chances are that you will change bedding before this happens.
