Looking for Garden Worms - 2008/04/20 07:19 I've been a worm fan since I was a toddler and used to carry them in my pockets as "pets." Let's say my mom wasn't thrilled about that...

I'm looking for good old American earthworms to put in my garden. We bought a neglected house with sterile soil and I'm working to bring it back. We are sadly lacking worms because there was nothing for them to eat here. Now I've provided organic material but the worms are slow to realize there is a banquet here now.

I do NOT want African worms as I don't want to introduce foreign species. I remember seeing a site a few years back with a worm farm run by an elderly Black lady but don't seem to be able to find it now.

I suppose it's only a matter of time before I start raising red wigglers or crawlers in my basement but for now I just need some hungry garden worms. Please let me know if there is a place I can buy some. I promise to take good care of them.

Peace,
Jane

Re:Looking for Garden Worms - 2008/04/20 08:53 Try the Cape Cod worm farm. It's run by a nice elderly black lady, who is very helpful Hope this helps
or why not go nightcrawler hunting at your local park .

You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it
doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn’t move and does,
use the duct tape.

Re:Looking for Garden Worms - 2008/04/20 09:45 Ah hah! She's the lady I was looking for. Thank you VERY much!

Unfortunately the area I live in would not be safe to go out worm hunting at night. I'm in New Haven, CT the home of Yale and yet the crime rate is incredible.

Thanks again!

Re:Looking for Garden Worms - 2008/04/20 12:48 New Haven at night, I remember it well. I hope you don't live near Congress Avenue. That would be the Pits its I wouldn't go walking there at night either. check with Yale University ground keepers Department perhaps they would let you do it on their property. I grew up in West Haven and Guilford Killingworth, and now live in Vermont. We have our share of problems here also all. I just bought a handgun to feel better about being handicapped. I hope I never have to use it however with only one leg. I don't think I go to jail if I shoot an intruder.
