Newbie here... - 2008/04/24 02:30 Just wanted to say "Hi!". I'm new to vermicomposting, just got my 1# Red Wigglers today! I'm using 10 gal Rubbermaid totes, OSCAR plans. I can't wait to have some castings for my garden...the wait is going to be almost unbearable! LOL How many times have I peeked at my little ones already? Not telling! LOL

If you haven't done, please read this forum from inception as well as the linked forums included in posts here. Many of your future questions are answered already, but we're here for ya too.
I hope you and your herd get along fine, and remember that moderation, patience and diversity are virtues required for successful worming.
Peeking is allowed and encouraged .

Re:Newbie here... - 2008/04/29 00:49 Well, it's been about a week and I keep peeking but have not done any suppulemtal feeding just some water spraying. My heard is doing great...I think? Should I dig my hand down and look at them? They have not been crawling out, the firtst couple of nights I kept them under a bright light and I think that helped alot. I can see that the original bedding is going down, should I feed them now? I have some "food" in the freezer waiting for them. I want to start another bin with some new worms...am I crazy? I'm just ready for some castings and I'm also planning on starting a very small chicken coop this summer and figured I could feed my new chicks some tasty worms. Is that so mean? I already told my husband all hens will stay until they die of natural causes...I could NEVER eat a pet! Am I being mean to my worms?

Re:Newbie here... - 2008/04/29 01:37 oooooh careful mention feeding poor little defenseless worms to big mean chickens can get you stoned around here. But I do the same thing. Except I only use the ungrateful no good blankety blanks that try to escape my wonderful rent free habitat.
My wife and I have a deal. As long as the hens are laying eggs their safe. When they stop laying eggs & feeding the family...... I'll think of another way for them to feed the family.

Re:Newbie here... - 2008/04/29 03:38 LOL! That is way to funny! See, I could never even think of eating one of my future hens but, the worms are fee game. LOL No, don't stone me..it's the circle of life! What is the differce if I feed a few to my future hens or YOU fish with them? I'm a good Mom..I swear!

Re:Newbie here... - 2008/04/29 12:44 Once you feed a chick a worm you'll see a great game a keep away start. Its so fun to watch you'll find yourself giving them more and more. next thing you know the chickens see you coming and run up to you for treats. then you may notice your bins aren't reproducing/processing fast enough to keep up with the chickens habit or your food scraps.
On another note, chickens lay best from 8-24 months after that egg production really slows down. If you don't "find them a nice home in the country to retire to" your going to find yourself living with a bunch of free loaders. After all it is the circle of life, right?

I want to start another bin with some new worms...am I crazy?Yes. Welcome.
...I could NEVER eat a pet! Am I being mean to my worms? But you could feed a pet to another pet... ? Just pokin', but any chickens I've ever had always found their protein treats out in the yard.
Were I raising fishin' worms, I wouldn't be so attached, but my l'il composting fellas are precioussssss.
