Temperature - 2008/04/25 23:41 Hi Im new here. I have just orderd 2 pounds of red wigglers and im worried about being able to keep them safe form this Texas heat. When I read 75 degrees is optimal for production does this mean outside temp or inside the bed temp. Also any suggestions on keeping my worms cool in the backyard would be appreciated. Thanks Anthony

Re:Temperature - 2008/04/28 07:25 Here are some ideas on cooling but first the 75 degrees would be the inside bin temp.

Here are some suggestions.
1) Dig the pit below the "frost line" the temp at that depth stays some what constant.

2) If using a bin place it in the shade all day long and mist during really hot days.

3) I saw on one web site where the person pumped water using pvc through the bin then below the ground and back.

Hope this helps.

Rob

Re:Temperature - 2008/04/29 21:44 Anthony, most first batch losses are from over-care, i.e. too much water &/or chow, not heat.
How are you planning to house your l'il fellas?
Yer getting pretty close to crunch time if they're inbound already.
Y'all have fun, whatever you're doing.

Re:Temperature - 2008/04/30 19:04 Thanks Gary. Ive built a box 2'x2' with a lid and screend vents this past weekend and mixed my bedding wich was 1/3 paper and 2/3 peat with a layer of cow manuer compost on top. Big news is I got my worms today. Im very excited.
