Hello, newbie here! - 2008/04/28 11:53 Just signed up here and wanted to say hello. I have had my first bin of red wigglers going for about 3 wks now I think and all is good. Started w/2lbs and saw my first cocoons late last week... Yippee!

I have them in a 14 gal Rubbermaid & plan to make a tower out of it. Hope to slowly remove a few worms occasionally and start a new bin or possible a simple flow through system so I can have more to feed. I've also been considering getting a lb of the ENC's to see how they do.

All in all I'm having fun & can't get enough reading about them... or bothering the worms (got to stop so they'll breed & eat more!!!)

Good to have found you all here!

Suzie

...I had some trouble finding the forum here for vermicomposting because it's listed under earthworm discussion. Anyone else have that problem?

Re:Hello, newbie here! - 2008/04/28 14:11 HI Suzie.

I also use 14 gallon tubs. I feed a tub for about a month or two then split it in half and start a second tub. If all has gone well with your heard by the time you split the contents from your first bin in half they should have doubled in population. I try to keep my 14 gallon tubs to about 2-3 lbs of worms each. seems to give them more room to spread out.

Just my opinion, cause it seems to work for me others may experience different results offers not valid in Alaska Hawaii or Puerto Rico. (standard disclaimer)

Re:Hello, newbie here! - 2008/04/29 00:56 Hey, It's been a week for my little guyz and I'm ready to stick my hand down there and actually "see" how they're doing! Sounds like things are going well for you, good luck with your ENC!

Re:Hello, newbie here! - 2008/04/30 09:05 Thanks for the encouragement! This is so much fun. Dh doesn't understand my enthusiasm, but that's ok... he tolerates it

I have trouble yet with staying out of the bin just to "check" on things. I think it's fine to put your hand down in the bin to see how things are doing. I usually do it when I feed them to make sure the bottom isn't getting wet (even though I have drainage holes), & it gives me a chance to see their progress. I think I will disturb them a lot less when I've become more familiar with them. Right now I'm so into trying to keep the moisture & food balance in check that I'm in it every day or two.
