Purple mites - 2008/05/02 00:22 Anyone ever come across mites in their bins that are purple? I've had white, I've had red, today I found some that look purple (nope wasnt drinking at the time).

Their in my homemade flow through bin. Last Saturday I dumped the entire bin cause it was plugged up. At that time I didnt see hardly any of the white mites (least not so many that I made note of 'em). I'm going to go ahead and treat the bin like I would for being overrun with other mites. Just curious If others have had the purple and if anyone knew their names?

Re:Purple mites - 2008/05/03 01:22 I googled them also and found a couple of references to Florida citrus mites. But 1, Alaska is not Florida. and 2 I've never put any citrus fruits in any of my bins. So if that is what they are the bums were hitchhiking.

Gary I dont think they are the same ones youve seen, cause I havent heard any singing of sappy kids songs comming out of the bin.

Ok Charlie I'll bite how do you get rid of your mites?

Re:Purple mites - 2008/05/03 16:16 Place moistened newspaper on top of bedding, and remove the paper as mites accumulate on them. Repeat as necessary

Pieces of sweet fruit rinds like watermelon can be placed in the bin and removed as the mites congregate.

Excessive watering but not flooding the bin will cause the mites to surface where you can burn em with a propane torch.

Never saw any purple mites.

And you thought I mite be harboring a joke...
