diatomaceous earth - 2008/05/13 20:47 Anyone know about the viability of using diatomaceous earth for control of pest, like ants around worm bins.
the site I was looking at said that food grade
D.E. was not harmful to worms but did not expound?

Please expound if you can.

Re:diatomaceous earth - 2008/05/14 01:14 From what I understand it kills insects because it rides it's way under their exoskeleton, kinda like beach sand down your bathing suit, and pries open their carapace allowing air to get in. They can't retain their moisture levels and basically dehydrate.

I'd think because worms are soft bodied it wouldn't hurt them. They need to stay moist but not in the same way as the hard shelled punks. It'd probably be no different to them than if they crawled through some sand...just juice back up and all is well.

One problem with using that stuff is that it will kill any and all insects that come into contact with it...so you might wanna watch out if you have a garden nearby. Ya don't wanna go murderin' your Lady Bugs and Lacewings and the like.

Re:diatomaceous earth - 2008/05/14 11:30 I tried it on potato beatle didn't seem to do any good. it does great in the house though. We don't necessarily need to save the world , it will survive in spite of us .WE is what we need to save !!!
