Nightly Invasion of the Worms - 2008/05/18 14:06 We recieved 5 pounds of worms on Friday and put them in their new home. We turned the light on the first night and all was good.

Last night is another story.

My daughter came home around 1:00 and woke us up to tell us we had a small emergency. She said there were some worms on the dining room floor. I got up expecting to see a few escapees. Hah! 5 pounds of red worms all over my dining room floor. Ok, maybe not all five pounds but close. And they were still coming out of the bin. There was no where to step. Yep, we forgot to turn the light on over the bin. I have heard some of you talk about the sight to see when there is a mass exodous, but OH MY WORD. What a sight it really is. We had to tear part of the carpet up to capture some of them. We are still finding a few stragglers this morning.

Learned our lesson. Don't forget to turn the light on above the bins!!!

Re:Nightly Invasion of the Worms - 2008/05/18 16:07 Kori,

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Did you manage to save many of them?
Thanks for sharing your experience. I've often wondered what would happen if the lights were off. They seem so well behaved when the lights are on, after all. So I've been beginning to wonder how bad it could be. Now I know we must be vigilant.

Re:Nightly Invasion of the Worms - 2008/05/18 16:58 Thanks for your concern. We were able to save most of them. (Really only a few died up) It was just a job getting them picked up. We were able to laugh about it a bit this morning. But yes, it is important to keep those lights on. At least until they consider the bin their happy home. Oh, and I guess during bad storms too. Oh, what fun worms can be

Re:Nightly Invasion of the Worms - 2008/05/18 18:12 See, in all my reading I haven't heard of the lights being kept on. I had a problem with them getting out and did use a light one night to see if that would help but only once. I've been keeping them outside on the steps.

Wonder how many left me? Punks.

So does everyone use a light?

Re:Nightly Invasion of the Worms - 2008/05/18 22:04 Wow! Now that's another Hitchcock movie plot!

I'm still waiting on my first worm delivery, so thanks for reliving your "night of horror" for the benefit of us greenhorns.

I thought I had read though that if you had a 1 1/2 inch lip above the dirt and food, the worms would stay put. Not so, I guess?

When worms come in the mail, they have been subjected to heat, cold, vibration, dehydration and lack of food.
No matter how great you have built their new home, as soon as it gets dark, they will book.
I would leave a light on until you see the worms very involved in their food.
They will not eat when stressed. When they are eating well, they have nothing else that they do, except eat garbage, and you can turn off the light.

Re:Nightly Invasion of the Worms - 2008/05/18 23:11 No matter how good the bed is it ain't home! They are just looking for their home and wondering what happened? leave the light on for a few days and they will decide that this in now home and will settle down. (Till the first fast moving front comes through with the next storm.)
