Hope im doing OK - 2008/05/08 21:28 Hello all, Ive had my red wigglers for a week now and I see something new every day. I havnt feed them yet Im going to start them tommorow with coffee grounds and lettuce. I do have a couple of concerns. At first they seemed to be not moving much and Ive noticed maybe 6 have dryed up and died and maybe 4 seem to have seperated in the middle. So I decided my bed wasnt wet enough. Two days ago I watered more than I thought I should now Ive seen a couple that look bloated in the middle. O well any help will be great. Thanks Anthony

Re:Hope im doing OK - 2008/05/18 07:56 Anthony,

Wow! 88 views and no replies! I'll give this one a try.

The worms tend to get stressed going through the mail and settling into a new environment. The older ones are the most susceptible to this. When mine arrived, strands of fabric from the bags had wrapped around some of them, causing bloating and narrowing along their bodies. I had a few dead ones for several days after that. But most of the worms were thriving under the surface. I wouldn't worry about a few dead ones in your first week or so.

Re:Hope im doing OK - 2008/05/18 10:24 Hi Anthony,
I realize this is an old question now, but I hope you've been feeding them. Have some food at room temperature for a few days to get them "ready to eat".
Start with a cup, assuming you started with a pound of worms, and see how long it takes for them to eat it. If they eat it after a few days, slowly increase the amount.

I'm not sure of the watering part. Food is 80% water, so supposing your bin is a plastic one, and indoors, watering of any kind isn't necessary.

I'm sure the problems you experienced may just have been from stress, and they are settling in much better now.

Re:Hope im doing OK - 2008/05/18 10:24 Thanks avid, Maybe I was overreacting to much. My bed seems to have leveld out moisture wise and the worms seem to be happy. I have noticed a few very small red flea like bugs on top of the bed and im thinking they may be mites.

Re:Hope im doing OK - 2008/05/18 10:28 Thanks Sherry, I think my moisture level is fine now. I have a wood box outside located in the shade for my bin. And I have fed them coffee grounds and chopped onion stalks from my garden.

Re:Hope im doing OK - 2008/05/18 11:46 What they said

The only thing I would add is this

What to feed worms
Worms are great eaters and like most vegetable
and fruit scraps (except onions and citrus), but as
worms do not have teeth, scraps should be cut into
small pieces. Worms also like:
• soaked and ripped pizza boxes
• shredded and soaked cardboard
• newspaper
• teabags
• coffee grinds
• bread
• egg shells
• leaves and dirt
• hair
Favorite foods include
Apple, avocado, pear, grapes, potato, lemon,
carrot, cabbage, mushroom, peach, capsicum,
plum and all other kinds of vegetable and fruit
scraps.
What not to feed
Don’t try to feed worms food such as meat,
cheese, jam, butter, biscuits, cake or any other
highly processed food. They’ll refuse to eat it,
causing the food to spoil and create unpleasant
odors in the worm farm. They also don’t like
onions, shallots, garlic or too much acidic food like
oranges, mandarins or pineapples. No meat and
diary products.

Re:Hope im doing OK - 2008/05/20 13:06 Bloating is sometimes cause by to much protein.
How they are feeling better..
