small gravel and other things in castings - 2008/05/31 15:47 I harvested our first bin today, using an old harvester that was given to us. it has 1/4 inch wire on top and 1/8 inch wire on bottom. The problem I had was 1st my stuff was too wet to process properly, so I learned that lesson. Then I had lots of gravel and other trash
go through as well. How do I stop that I think the gravel came from the Walmart Cow Manure and lots of sand too...how do I keep these gravel from passing through. Should I add an overlapped piece of 1/8 inch wire to finer strain? Plus I only got about a pound of
castings.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re:small gravel and other things in castings - 2008/06/01 09:40 You want find anything in the castings unless you put it in the bed first. Just don't put anything in the bed that you don't want in your castings. You are wasting your money on that bagged cow manure.

Re:small gravel and other things in castings - 2008/06/02 01:27 Trying to overlap wire screen easily is like having sex in a hammock ...... standing up . You need a smaller mesh to make it easier . Sometimes the mesh on a screen is given with just a number (20 , 50 etc.) I will give you a quick formula to determine the size of the openings . Take the mesh number and divide it into 1 . The mesh actually represents the number of openings in one inch . When you have your answer (which will be a decimal) you then multiply the answer by .8 .This removes the thickness of the wire which separates each opening . EXAMPLE: 50 mesh means 50 openings per inch . You divide 1 by 50 and you get .020 . Then multiply .020 by .8 and you get .016 . This is just a tad bigger than 1/64th of an inch . If you want to overlap 1/8" you are looking for 1/16" which is .0625 . So we invert the equation to find that we are looking for about .080 which is right about a 12 mesh .If you live near a store that sells prospecting supplies they have mesh screens with sides that will work your castings easily . Cool indeed, lanbro. ALL CAPS, not so much . Now ya know where it is coming from, what the producers are getting dosed with and when.
All wormers should be so lucky.
Y'all have fun, whatever you're doing.

Re:small gravel and other things in castings - 2008/06/15 00:32 Yes it's very cool...We have even got the other two farms to alternate the worming of the livestock so we
always have at least one source in addition to ours.
Of course we had to pay them off with a good dose of
castings on the hay fields. LOL...but well worth it.
