Worm tea from pond water? - 2008/03/27 13:52
Does anyone use pond water to make worm tea? Seems like this would be beneficial but I'd like to hear from someone who's tried it and compared results to using plain 'ole water.

I've heard of using pond water for compost tea. You can use it to get the microbial activity up.

Hmm, fish poop, worm poop, pond water... Makes me think about cleaning my filter into a bucket this year. Whenever I cycle my little pond's water I add the pull-out around plantings, and hose out the filter in a planting bed, but that sounds like something worth testing, Michelle . Think I will. Anybody seen a reason not to try this?

I would think that the results would be hard to quantify. anyone who has used worm tea with plain water knows it works great. maybe pond water works a little better due to already established micro organisms and extra nutrients from decayed plant matter. But is it going to be a noticiable differance? I for one would love to see your results Gary!

I would think that the results would be hard to quantify. I might think if Gary did a test using tea w/water, tea w/pond water and pond water on 3 similar plants that might give some results to compare. So...Gary we have now set up a new project/experiment for you to do. Just what you needed, right?

I'm thinking I'll use my old 10g bins as planters to keep nutrient intro separated. Believe I'll use a determinate tomato for the subject plant. Might stick a pepper in each bin too . 1. tea with county water & vc 2. tea with pond water & vc 3. pond water Ought I aerate, or just mix / draw a water bucket as they need it?

OK. It's been a busy month. Finally got this experiment started today, while HH6 was sleeping off this morning's knee surgery meds. She's fine; no worries. So - 3 bins, 3 plants, 3 different nutrient intros. Setup: 10g Sterilite bins, 12x 5/32" drainage holes each, one layer of corrugated cardboard under 40# of bagged topsoil and 6c of vc per bin.
I decided to go with Anaheim peppers (yum), and added a bit of mulch on top.
All bins will get natural rainfall. From left to right...
county water with vc / pond water with vc / pond water. Watering / feeding only as needed beyond natural rainfall, but equal measurements for each when I do. They all got a good soaking with county water after planting today just to get 'em settled. I'll start the different feedings when they next need it.

YVW, Michelle, and no problem. Thanks to you and Susan for pokin' my brain cells into trying something new. After a day and night of pretty steady >20mph wind and no rain, I watered yesterday. 1gal liquid: CW (county water) + 1c vc / PW (pond water)+ 1c vc / and just PW. No extended aeration, but I did mix 'em all up with a bulb auger on reverse in my drill for about a minute. I'm all for trying new stuff, but I can't justify 2 more air pumps etc. to do this as an aerated experiment. I'll be happy with seeing what the un-enhanced microherds do for the plants.

Gary, what's the latest update on the pond water experiment?

Michelle wrote: Gary, what's the latest update on the pond water experiment? Well, I've only fed the peppers twice now, along with a few good natural showers. The weather here has just started to warm up to pepper plant likin', so I haven't seen much change yet. It is about time for another dose though - reckon I'll do that one evening this week. No rain to speak of and the pond filter needs cleaning again, dammit. My peppers don't usually get crankin' here for another month, so this'll be a summer-long experiment. I did set rebar pegs in the bins and tied 'em up with twine so the wind doesn't lay 'em flat.

I think you mentioned the peppers died, somewhere on here, but I thought I would repost to see...
