ENC/EF in same bin - 2008/06/04 14:43 Hi all,

I'm a newb, but was wondering if someone could tell me what would happen if you put both ENC's and EF's in the same bin... I've read a good bit and haven't seen any mention of whether these worms will cross breed or if they would have some sort of worm war

I have had my EF's for about 3 weeks now, and they seem to be doing pretty well, but i just got my ENC's today. So any advice as to the differences in care of the two types would be appreciated.

Re:ENC/EF in same bin - 2008/06/04 15:32 I am no expert, but from what I have learned, worms don't cross breed. They stick with their own. And from what I have read, it is fine to mix the two together. I have both and treat them all the same. Same bedding, same feed. But..... if you ever plan on selling you want to keep them seperate. They are hard to sort when they are together, and there would be no way to seperate them once you put them together.

If for some reason you wanted to separate them later, it would be nearly futile, especially as the young ones are hard to tell apart.
I used to keep reds and euros in separate bins and found that the euros liked the bin a bit deeper and cooler. Susan Quinby-Honer

I actually wound up putting them in seprate bins... well, my bins are old used nursery containers w/ landscape fabric hot-glued over the holes to prevent escape. I'm also covering the top w/ landscape fabric.

Another thing i wanted to ask about in regard to the bedding material: I'm using peat moss and composted cow manure instead of wet newspaper. Are the worms going to be less likely to eat my kitchen scraps because they have plenty to eat in the bedding itself ?? Like I said, my EF's seem to be happy but the kitchen scraps don't seem to disappear very quickly.

Again, thanks for the quick replies to my original post, and thanks in advance for any insight/comments about my bedding material.

Re:ENC/EF in same bin - 2008/06/05 20:55 Steve, anytime you use something already crankin' microbially in the bin your intro'd chow goes slower. I see the same thing when I add a bunch of shredded leaves to the bedding.
I reduce my kitchen intros for awhile until they get through a lot of what they're likin' at the time.
