Set up questions - 2008/06/08 14:47 Hello! I am just starting out with worms. My dh has built a beautiful three tray wooden bin and I'm waiting for my worms to arrive. I am confused about initial set up. I've read posts here that say not to feed the worms right away when you get them, but I've read elsewhere to put food in the bin a week before you get the worms. Which is it?
Also, do I line the bottom of the bin with anything besides bedding? The bottom of the bin is 1/4" hardware cloth.
Thanks for any advice you can give this newbie!

Re:Set up questions - 2008/06/09 13:03 Welcome,

I didn't add food till I received the worms. Start off with a small amount because it will take a few days for them to get used to their new "digs".
If they are hungry they will eat the bedding.

Re:Set up questions - 2008/06/09 20:41 Your call really, Beadmama, and welcome.
Me, I like to have something microbially active in their new home when they arrive. Thinkin' that kinda makes 'em feel welcome and less likely to stray in search of something to nosh after the trip. Like Rob said, start small though; it can take 'em a few days to get comfy enough to eat.
For a screen bottom bin, I'd add a few sheets of newspaper or a piece of corrugated cardboard under the bedding to start. That's what I did when I had my WormFactory working. It breaks down quick under bedding so you oughtn't have any issues when it's time for them to move to your next tray.
What is your bedding, how big is the bin and how many of what kind of worms?
Y'all have fun, whatever you're doing.
