I think I killed my worms! - 2008/06/26 00:14 In my effort to get rid of fire ants, I think or I know I got rid of every last worm! They were doing so very well after a bit over a year or so... then I moved them and decided it was a mistake... put them back in their old bin... got fire ants... go rid of those. I was trying to decide what type of oil to put in a tray under the bin to keep out the ants. My little voice told me that I should not use orange oil because the worms would be sensitive to the fumes, but in my debate with myself about other oils spoiling, etc... I decided to try it! Well a couple days later I looked in the bin and all I saw were the soldier fly larva! They were everywhere! I think every square inch had 5-10 of the things! AND NOT WORM ONE! Guess I will need to start over... put little screens in my bins to keep out the soldier flies, initially plan water under the bin to keep out the ants and see where we go from there... Hopefully this time I will not kill them all

Re:I think I killed my worms! - 2008/07/12 14:27 I'm not an expert, yet, but I'm waiting patiently for the weather to get cooler so I can order my worms. I do however have a compost barrel and to my initial horror found that larvae, of some kind, had invaded it. In my research I've decided they are black soldier flies. It sounds like they are beneficial, at least to my compost barrel (I'm new to that also and have lots to learn and they've become a big help. Here is a link to a website that was very informative in several areas including ants. My plan is to use the compost in the worm bin when I get the worms.

Good luck in your worm farming.
