too dark? - 2008/07/17 21:32 I would like to get my worms out of my house. We were given a small building but it does not have any windows in it so it would be dark all the time. Would it be alright to put my bins out there with out light? They are established bins and haven't had any escape in a long time. My husband wants to wait until he can put some electricity out there, but I don't want to wait that long nor do I want to have to pay the bill to have lights on in there. I guess we could put some windows in it but I want them out now. Need to use the room they are in for other things. The building is the top of an old silo with a door on the roof and it is in our woods so it stays cool.

Any suggestions?

Re:too dark? - 2008/07/17 22:24 Sounds like a great place for your herd, Kori.
I'd just monitor them more closely for awhile after the move to make sure they adapt well.
Y'all have fun, whatever you're doing.

Re:too dark? - 2008/07/17 23:18 If you should find them wandering around you might look into "Task Lighting", Model No. Sl8ECP 13" Linkable Fluorescent Task Light. These little things use only 8 watts which burning 24 hours a day they have to burn 5-1/4 days to use one kiowatt. It comes with a couple of clips to screw to a cabinet underside or in my case a board suspended over the bins.
The is a power cord that you plug in and a short pigtail cord that goes in the other end and then you would hook the next light onto the other end and just keep going. Up to 20 can be linked to one power cord this way.
They're a little pricey at Ace Hardware stores, like $23.00 I think that I paid for them. I haven't checked at WalMart or Lowes but they may have them. I have them set up over my African nightcrawlers and they are bright enough to keep them down.
