I'm unsure which variety they are I bought them at a local conveince store sold as bait. I've heard that the nightcrwlers are not good for worm castings. What do you think?

Re:Sources for worms? - 2008/03/04 12:19The ones I have are munching down food and pushing it out their back end pretty quick. From what I've read on here, people have just as much luck with Euro's than with Red's. Some say they just don't multiply as quickly as Red's. Also, if you use castings that may have cocoons in them, the Euro's will do well in the garden (depending on climate), where Red's won't (unless your garden doubles as a horse dump).
If you already have them, keep them and see how they do. I'd get some Red's too, the more the better. Then you'll have worms for castings and for bait.-:Mark:- MEInc.us Hampton, VA

Re:Sources for worms? - 2008/03/18 15:21Canadian Nightcrawlers (Dew worms, nothern nights) do not make great castings. These are likely what you got if you the package only said "Nightcrawlers" on it.
Their castings have lots of lumps and it is nowhere near as fine as red, ANCs, or ENCs. Their castings in my experience has been that Canadian 'cralwers make more of a "vermicompost" than "castings".

Nightcrawlers will survive a long time in captivity if the conditions are right. I have been raising them for almost a year now.
If you keep them in the cups they come in, and just put them in the fridge, you are right they aint gonna be around long. A couple months ago, I went rooting around a horse stable manure pile and all I could find were dew worms. I brought them home anyway, and then posted a query about successful raising indoors, and googled.
It was a general concensus that they aren't good composters. So I set them free.

They are good composters if you are looking for castings. Their castings are much larger and chunkier than red worms or euros.
We have really given up on raising "Nightcrawlers" (dew worms, CNC's, Northern Nites) indoors. We are now raising eoro's instead. So I did the right thing by setting them free. I'll just stick with my reds. I find it hard to get "close" to the bigger worms. They're not "cute-looking" like the red guys. I can look at them all day, whereas the dew-worms, aka Cdn NC's actually grossed me out.

I live in North Florida and what is sold as bait worms here are called Florida Wigglers, I need to know what is the differance between these and the Red Wigglers. Is this just the same worm with a regional name? Or, two different worms.
Also, I am starting a small bait worm farm, and would appreciate suggestions on the best type to start with. I do not have ready access to manure, at this time. I do know some local cattle people who might allow me to collect some from their pastures, but do I have to put manure into the bedding mix.
