Anyone familiar with Uncle Jims worm farm? - 2008/08/15 02:18 I'm trying to locate a source of red wigglers to start my worm farm. Best price I've found is from Uncle Jim's worm farm. Have any of you purchased from them before? unclejimswormfarm.com

Like to know the quality of worms before I order 50lbs.

Re:Anyone familiar with Uncle Jims worm farm? - 2008/08/15 10:06 Don't know anything about the place you mentioned but you can always order with a credit card if they take them and if they are not right just protest it. I also know that the difference between you getting 10 lbs and fifty lbs. is just a little time in the bed. Why not just get 10 lbs and grow the other 40 lbs for free. The experience will be worth it. you can kill 10 lbs a lot cheaper that 50 lbs. when you make a newbee mistake!

Re:Anyone familiar with Uncle Jims worm farm? - 2008/08/15 14:20 WFike,

I hope to be built up to about 400lbs next spring so I can market 100lbs per month and not deplete my stock. I'm assuming that the "worm season" usually would start in the spring? Or is it pretty well year round, peaking in the summer?

We are in a financial crunch and need to get income coming in as soon as we can. Our side business used to be raising 20,000 fryers at a time for Foster Farms (West coast competitor of Tyson foods). Our contract ended last month, and is not being renewed; due to our small size and distance from the processing plant. I am turning our smaller 50'x100'building into a worm barn.

You have a good point. If I do go with 50lbs, maybe I should at least split into two beds to start with and if i do kill a bed it will only be 25lbs.

Thanks for the advice,

Larry

Re:Anyone familiar with Uncle Jims worm farm? - 2008/08/15 18:59 If you start with a smaller amount of worms and want them to reproduce as fast as possible.. Someone here recently suggested: Opt for a confined habit at first, rather than spreading your population thin over the area that you have. Leaving populations more concentrated seems to give them more opportunity to get together and reproduce.

Re:Anyone familiar with Uncle Jims worm farm? - 2008/08/16 12:14 When I started out with worms I got my first batch from Uncle Jim. I started out with 1 pound. They were very large worms (i still havent been able to duplicate the size). They were a bit worse for wear from shipping but they spent 4 days in transit at temps down to 32F, So thats my fault for living so far away. He shipped the day after I placed my order, you cannt beat that. I would do business with him again if i lived closer. Jeremy
