which is what - 2008/08/17 09:52 Hi All

It me again, my question for today. Can anyone tell me how to tell the difference between a redworm and the red wiggler or is there a difference? I live in Alabama, the bait shops here sell both for fishing. I hope someone can clear up this confusion. Thankyou in advance. linda

Re:which is what - 2008/08/17 20:01 I believe redworm is referring to various compost dwelling worms and red wiggler is referring specifically to the Eisenia fetida. It's Black Gold!! It's Squirmy Tea!!

Re:which is what - 2008/08/18 18:39 I live in Choctaw Co. AL so I have a good idea of what you're talking about. And some are saying "Giant Reds" which when you buy them they don't look too giant to me. Some of the worms may be Lumbricus rubellus and some may be Eisenia fetida. There is supposed to be a difference in other than the size. If the clitellum goes all the way around the worm's body then it's ef but if the clitellum doesn't go across the stomach them it's lr.
If you want some questions from store personnel and some wierd stares go into a store and open the bait containers then stand there looking at the things real carefully. I've been searching out the rubellus so you can trust me on this. If you find the containers with the smaller ones then you get a higher worm count for your money.

Re:which is what - 2008/08/23 12:09 Thanks guys for the info. You are right on it Tim, my worms are still small but the difference is there. Also I noticed the color on the lrs is quite a bit darker than on the efs. Do you sell the lr or just raise them? I will look in the bait shops to see if they have the lrs or if they just have small efs. Thanks again linda

Re:which is what - 2008/08/23 13:21 Right now I'm just trying to build up. I've got the rubellus, Louisiana pinks, grey wigglers and Arican nightcrawlers. By far the Africans are the most prolific with the LA pinks coming in 2nd.
I hope to start selling them as soon as I get them built up to a good level. I hope to get some Europeans before long which should give me all bases covered on bait worms. Where in AL are you?

I checked one of the local bait shops the other day and the worms I bought as reds looked an aweful lot like my euros only very small ones. Where are you located? I am finding that as many of the postings on this sight have said, it depends on where you live as to what each worm type is called.

I have seen euros passed off as red wigglers. The euros (almost full grown) are always labeled Redworms here locally everyday. I live in Georgia. My friend knew the supplier that was supplying the local baitstores. The supplier told him, when he was low on red wigglers he would substitute them with small euros. The names they label them may change from one bait store to the next.
