Worm Factory Question - 2008/10/10 23:26 Greetings, I am hoping for some advice on when to add a new level to the worm factory.

Background:
I am new to worm farming and made the common mistake of overfeeding at the beginning which almost killed the whole bin.

In an effort to save the few worms that were still alive I went to a second stack level while my first stack was having issues and moved the few worms that were still alive to that level. That was about 5 months ago.

I now have a healthy two level bin which is full of worms. It is still probably a bit under-populated but the worms are happy and making babies. I keep adding food and more paper/cardboard to the top as needed, my question is when to move to another level?

Thanks

Re:Worm Factory Question - 2008/10/11 09:28 You can start a new level at any time. I start new bins all the time for friends and family. Just take out part of your population from the other 2 levels and throw em in. Be careful not to overfeed in the begining and they will quickly populate your new bin.

Re:Worm Factory Question - 2008/10/11 13:39 Kaiser, I have a Worm Factory also that has only been running for 5 months now. In the beginning I was having problems with my worms falling through to the bottom. I started my second bin as a catch bin, and now have two bins going strong. My top bin (third tray)is where I store my paper shred. When I feed my worms, I use the paper that has been stored in the top bin. It's somewhat moist as it absorbs excess moisture that accumulates at the top so it helps regulate moisture. Now I am noticing some worms are slowly moving into the top bin to check things out. When I think that they are moving up to stay is when I will start a third bin and stop feeding the bottom bin.

Re:Worm Factory Question - 2008/12/16 22:52 I have a worm factory also. I seems to take about a 2 weeks before my worm start moving up to the new level. I don't feed during this time, hoping they will start looking for food. I'm not really sure how to get them to move faster. I have tried to move worms up but they just move down on their own.
