What kind of earthworms - 2009/01/06 22:41 I'm new, with a question, and no photo capability, so I don't need an exact answer, but some guesses would be good!

I live in western WA. I have one of those black plastic composters that is the size if a fat garbage can.

Just before all the snow, I had lifted it up, set it beside where it had been, and forked/shoveled all the contents back into it, in the new spot. The bottom two-thirds was fairly well composted, so I put the newest garbage on the bottom and piled the composted stuff on top.

Approximately at the line between composted and not-composted stuff, I found masses and masses of earthworms, solid handfuls of worms. They were red and just looked like regular earthworms to me. (Like that says a lot!

I'm just thinking of getting back into vermicomposting and was reading a bit. Most sources said there are mainly two kinds you can use, Eisenia foetida or Lumbricus rubellus, and NOT to use regular garden earthworms.

I find this confusing. You have to buy EF or LR --- I couldn't just add a couple of handfuls of the worms I found in my commposter?

Any thoughts would be very welcome.

You don't need to buy anything more.
