do springtails leave the bin? - 2009/01/14 09:29 Got rid of the fruit flies that plagued my bin last yr but the springtails remain. don't bother me down in the basement but I was thinking of bringing the bins upstairs at least during the coming sub zero weather.

the fruit flies were content to stay put in the cold basement but a week after I moved them upstairs to the warmth they were sitting all over my walls. Does anybody know if these springtails (little white bugs that jump) will leave the bin in a warmer climate?

Re:do springtails leave the bin? - 2009/01/14 12:16 Here's what I think...Fruitflies hatch out in a worm bin but do not live there. Springtails on the other hand do live in the bin and so I would guess that is where they would stay, quite happily.
(Cold temps keep fruitfly eggs from hatching and their activity greatly reduced.)

Re:do springtails leave the bin? - 2009/01/14 19:40 Thanks Susan. Last yr when I brought the bin up I spent about a half hr wiping fr flies off the walls and ceiling. The strange thing was that they very seldom flew away as I zeroed in on them and when they did it was only to a spot a couple ft away. So I sure hope that there are no fly eggs waiting to hatch because I will probably bring the herd up for a party in the balmy temps.
