compacted material - 2009/01/19 05:47 The contents at the bottom of my rubbermaid-type bin are heavy and compacted. I can't smell any foul odor when opening the bin, but haven't dug down into it. No moisture is draining from the bottom, so I'm not sure if air is getting to it, either.

Should I dig into it loosen, and mix in the compacted material; move the worms into a freshly prepared bin; or continue to add fresh bedding to the top and continue as usual?

If this area is somewhat septic but isn't mixed in or disturbed, will it harm the worms?

Thanks! Bren

Re:compacted material - 2009/01/19 12:25 VC does get very dense and heavy. My 10 gallon rubbermaids can weigh 25lbs when only a little over half full.
If you still have room to put in your food and keep a good layer of shredded paper on top then keep on doing that. It is time to harvest when you have no more space to feed in.

Re:compacted material - 2009/01/28 16:43 I also use a plastic bin and they tend to hold moisture. I mx the contents with some shredded paper every month and a half if too wet. During the last few weeks before harvest is when I dry the bin out to get dryer castings. I don't add food other than shredded paper which also serves to dry the contents.
