What to do in summer heat? - 2006/01/24 11:43 Though several of the discussion cover what to do with worms in the winter, I'm wondering how to handle them when it gets to be sweltering hot out. I'm in central Arkansas (think 100 degrees and humid!), and trying to set up a small outdoor vermiculture demonstration, but have had trouble in the past keeping the worms in the bins. Any suggestions for hot-weather composting? Is it possible? What type of bin is best for this? Other tips?

Re:What to do in summer heat? - 2006/01/24 18:24 Yessir, it's not only possible, but very workable...you've gotta be in the shade, an keep em moist. Remember, air temps aren't as important as the ambient temps in the bed itself...Seeya, Bob www.trinity-ranch.com

Re:What to do in summer heat? - 2006/01/24 18:43 schairbaum...What kind of bins do you have set up? What kind of worms do you think you had, that did not want to stay in your bins? If you have composting worms that are suited to bin life, and all their needs are met, they would be in worm heaven and not need to go anywhere else.
You can do this in summer..in the heat. I would suggest a very shady area, with a cover. (Check out my "in-ground bins" post and you will see some cinderblock bins that I built). I have put 2 liter frozen water bottles in my bins sometimes to cool them off

Re:What to do in summer heat? - 2006/01/25 00:56 There are several worm growers in Arkansas that are very successful. Where are you in Arkansas? I might get you to someone that can help you out.

Jerry

P.S. I am in Texas and it gets plenty hot.

Re:What to do in summer heat? - 2006/01/25 18:31 We're looking to build new bins, and I like the idea of using bricks. I'm thinking of putting them under our porch because that's about the only shade we have, so we need something to be fairly short (there's about 3 ft. of space)and accessible still. I heard that a deep bin might allow the worms to burrow if it gets too hot on the surface, what do you think? ...Jerry, we're located in Perryville, Perry County, about 45 miles northwest of Little Rock.
