Source for free worm food - 2009/02/26 12:35 I called the local food bank in my area and asked if I could have their expired canned fruits/veggies. They were thrilled and gave me over 150 cans today and said I can come once a month for that much or more.
So call your local food bank and ask them.
BUT, if you live the Fort Worth area, please do not call the Community Storehouse because that is where I am going.
One of the foods I recieved today was canned cranberry sauce.
Does anyone know if that is ok to feed worms? Since it is acidic I was thinking of "mixing" with other non acidic foods and feeding it that way.

Re:Source for free worm food - 2009/02/26 15:22 My local food bank calls me as well. They are the distribution center so they have refrigerated areas. I brought home bags of potatoes, and cases of lettuces and produce for my guys. I gleefully chop and put in the freezer. I asked about the expired food, but they don't really have anything that's expired. It all seems to go.

As far as the cranberry sauce, I would introduce a bit of it into their regular food, in a corner of the bin. Anything you're not sure of, it's best to do it this way. Last summer I had some fermented watermelon that I wasn't sure if they would like or not. I fed a bit, and they swarmed it, so they were obviously quite happy, in a drunken state.

Re:Source for free worm food - 2009/03/17 00:26 May not be pc, but I went behind a couple starbucks, in the dumpsters, and found buckets full of coffee grounds, along with pre-measured bags of coffee, unused, that they were obviously set up for use in the shop.
I hope the unused coffee isn't too rich, cause I put lots of it in the bins, and the worms don't seem to be having any ill effects from it.
I mixed it with sliced apples and strawberries from another stores through outs.
Used eggplant the week before. I guess that's what was on sale that week
So far the canteloupe seems to get eaten fastest, and unbelievably, the banana was one of the slowest things they ate.

I haven't got grain, but was thinking of getting a bag and culturing meal worms for my turtles and mice in it, as well as feeding it to the earthworms.
Any advice on this idea?

Re:Source for free worm food - 2009/03/17 07:12 I stop at a Dunkin Donuts where they actually set their coffee grounds aside for me near their dumpster. There's probably 50 pounds per day for me and it's going into the worm beds and sifted across my lawn.

Some days I pick up their discarded pizza, boxes and all. So far so good!

In the fall my local Agway store gave me all of their unsold pumpkins, two pickup truck loads. I buried many in my raised beds but most I cut up, removed the seeds and fed to the critters. They loved it!

Jeff, I did a similar thing this fall. I requested everyone's pumpkins on our local Freecycle. I spent one Saturday driving around town picking up the pumpkins that everyone offered me. I had a blast.
I chopped and froze bags of pumpkins. They're still eating it.
