Rabbit Droppings - 2009/03/04 16:43 Hello All, I am new to the forum and WF. An associate has offered me rabbit droppings (50 lbs.)
I just started my bins a week ago, I have been shredding lots of paper and my wife gave me her old blender to grind coffe grains, vegetables and egg shells (ground in a coffe bean grinder). Can I use any of the rabbit droppings and how much and how often. And would I just roll them on top of the bedding in moderate amounts.
I have been following the forum long enough to know not to feed my worms to often. Thanks.

Re:Rabbit Droppings - 2009/03/04 19:58 Hank,

Rabbit manure is my first choice for feeding my worms. I have about 250lbs of red worms in 4 3'x8' beds. Presently they are eating 100 lbs every 6 days. I actually fill 4 5 gal. buckets and add water to them and let it sit a day or two and stir it into consistency that I can just about pour down the center of the bed and trowel it out thinner. Just don't cover the whole surface area - they need a place to escape if it heats. I put a generous amount out and when it is cleaned up, I put more on.

What I like about it is that it's a clean feed. when it's cleaned up, there's nothing left behind unlike with melon skins, bananas, etc.

Re:Rabbit Droppings - 2009/03/04 23:28 I did have 88 holes of doe cages so I've still got rabbit manure piled up. I take the dried droppings and soak them in water for 24 hours then pour on one end of the beds. With 40+ beds I don't feed it but once a week and use ground grain the other 5 days with 1 day of no feed to let the worms clean all up so the beds don't go sour. With my work schedule now I don't have much time to get in here as I'm now working 6:30 am -6:30 pm 5 days a week and may have to go to a lot more in a day or so or until I get a belly full and throw my badge and gun on the desk. I had to come home tonight and water then feed all of the beds then count and cup worms to put in a store tomorrow. No wonder my sugar is staying low lately, not enough sleep. My bed is calling me now so later folks.

Re:Rabbit Droppings - 2009/03/08 22:40 John,

I found a guy who sells rabbits for meat and pets. He has a couple hundred rabbits. If I take it from his outdoor pile he'll charge me. But if I help clean out inside his barn under the hutches, I can get that free.

I would go to your local feed store and ask them who buys the most rabbit feed. Then go ask them about getting some.

Re:Rabbit Droppings - 2009/03/09 13:31 John,
Check your State Rabbit Growers Association. You can go to their web site and talk to different breeders. Good Luck.

Re:Rabbit Droppings - 2009/03/09 17:45 It is totaly ok to add as much rabbit droppings to your bed as you like. If you are afraid of urine you can rince the droppings but I have read of many people that just keep red worms right under the cages. Rabbit droppings do not heat up so have at it. They love it and can be used as a bedding with shredded paper.

Re:Rabbit Droppings - 2009/03/17 07:27 I have been feeding rabbit manure extensively this winter. My rabbit hutches and worm beds moved to the basement in the fall.

There was a batch had accumulated and had lots of urine in it... that batch heated up quite a bit, but was only in a corner of a 6x6 bed, so none of the worms exited.

Ditto the person who had rabbits directly over the worms. I have a hutch with a doe and 5 bunnies over a fiberglas bathtub of worms... they all seem happy there.

Re:Rabbit Droppings - 2009/03/17 19:10 Kurtz, I have a lot of rabbit droppings from under outside pens. Does this storage effect the "poop" in any way or would any value have disapated in the several months of exposure. (November - present day) Thanks. Harold Davison, Canton, Ohio
