Worm Supplier - 2009/03/15 15:50 I came across a worm supplier a while back that sold worms by the pound and worms by the count. I remember that the worms by number were smaller worms but much cheaper than by the pound. Does anyone know which supplier offers this?
I am trying to increase my worm population on a budget. Thanks

Re:Worm Supplier - 2009/03/15 21:26 Trust me, nobody counts! If they give you a count, they just count once and weigh, from then on they give you that same weight.

The people who do sell by count typically are selling bait sized worms (which you would be getting less for your money on). Good luck finding what you are looking for.

Re:Worm Supplier - 2009/03/16 11:40 Liz

I ordered 3 lbs of Euros and counted them when I received them. I did okay. I got 1200 worms toward the end and quit counting.

But now when I dig through the worm bin I'd say they have done their 'disappearing act.' But they are still acting really healthy and it is a big extra large plastic laundry basket. It is lined and I don't have escapees.

Bait worms are large mature worms and counted out in very small numbers. They will reproduce and lay eggs. They do not eat as much or as fast as growing juveniles and there will be less individuals per lb.

Bedrun should include a variety of sizes from juvenile to mature worms, therefore it is possible to have a higher count of individuals per pound.

The important part is that you receive the worms alive and in good condition. There should be an average price range. My Euros came furthest and fastest and looked 'harvested', and the Red Wigglers looked like a wiggling mass of active worms ready to get to work and are hanging out near the top of the bin. I am happiest with them cause I can see them working.

Remember how fast they can reproduce and multiply when well managed....

Re:Worm Supplier - 2009/03/17 07:19 My thoughts are that there's no need to count critters.

If a worm can eat somewhere between 50 - 100% of its weight per day, then a pound of worms will consume 1/2 pound of food daily. Darwin discussed this extensively and Amy Stewart's book The Earth Movedhas some great stories about his work.
