How early is to early? - 2009/03/06 15:57 I'm just starting out and got many questions, but the most pressing is...
How early in the spring should I order worms?
It is now fairly warm, high 40's mid 50's during the day and is consistantly above freezing at night.

Re:How early is to early? - 2009/03/07 10:53 Now is the perfect time to order worms. It will take a couple months to get a significant number of castings, so the sooner the better. Reds and Euros will survive temps all the way down to freezing. So once you have safely passed that point, I'd recommend going ahead and buying them.

Re:How early is to early? - 2009/03/07 11:56 it is supposed to get colder next week. I'll keep them in a makeshift bin and if necessary keep them heated
Thanks

Re:How early is to early? - 2009/03/09 12:27 If you keep them indoors for a couple of weeks, in a 'smaller' bin and crowd them- they'll breed like mad and when you put them out in spring then you'll have even more to be going on with!

Re:How early is to early? - 2009/03/09 12:33 that's great I can get tons of horse manure for free. I'm planning on starting a small commercial operation.

Re:How early is to early? - 2009/03/17 07:32 My place is in PA and it's been pretty cold.

One of my compost heaps is surrounded by hay bales and has glass panels (from glass shower doors) and I placed black plastic bags over the compost last fall.

When I checked that bin last week there were worms thru the entire depth of the bin, and quite a few right under the plastic bags. My other compost heaps were still filled with ice. I topped the bin off with wet leaves and closed it back up till we get to planting season here.

Re:How early is to early? - 2009/03/19 15:09 I'm in Parkersburg, WV
it's been warm for the last week or so, but it's going to the mid 20ies tonight for the next few nights
I'll set a heating pad on low, put it ontop of the bin, and cover the whole thing with a blanket.

Re:How early is to early? - 2009/04/03 18:35 Jeff, how do you handle snow load? Or as I wrong with thinking you used the glass panels as roofing?
