Newbe question - 2009/04/02 03:17 Hi,

I am just beginning and have ordered 2 lbs of reds and a 3 tray stackable setup. The problem is that the worms will probably be here tomorrow but the tray won't arrive for a week or so. I bought a 18Gal plastic tub and drilled the obligatory holes in the bottom and sides for air. Mixed up some peat and tore up a bunch of newspapers with a little bit of composted manure. Have a bout 4-5 inch depth. Will this be large enough for some 2,000 worms?

Thanks,

Tom

Re:Newbe question - 2009/04/02 10:04 Jerry,

Thank you for the reply. Another question popped up last night as I lay awake at 2am anxiously awaiting my worm arrival. From what I've read in general, the time to harvest your castings is when all the bedding is consumed and whats left is a brown/black sustance. I've read that just plain shredded newspaper works fine and also a combination of newspaper and peat work well. I chose the latter. Now I understand the paper is food for the worms but will thet also convert the peat, which I understand is lacking in any nutrition, to castings also?
Thanks again for th advice,

Tom
