How often do you divide/harvest? - 2009/04/03 21:42 The burning question. How often do you harvest and divide your bin? When they are almost full or should I be doing it every so many days?
Thanks!

Re:How often do you divide/harvest? - 2009/04/05 07:43 As many of you know my bins are in coffee cans an are fed pureed pumpkin I check and feed every other day just to be sure they have enough to eat . And so I can have something to do. I don't poke around just observe what stage of development the bedding is, if it looks dark and crumbly then its ready I let these sit for an other day then harvest using the worms to start another bed

Re:How often do you divide/harvest? - 2009/04/05 23:05 Similar to BorealWormer, usually around 4 to 5 months on harvesting and dividing bins.

Re:How often do you divide/harvest? - 2009/04/08 02:30 I wish I could give you a time but it comes down to when the bin is ready. I feed my bins from left to right and harvest the same way. I screen my castings to 1/8". Six years of experiance I can tell when the castings are right and moister level correct to run through the harvester.
I only harvest about 1/4 the bin at a time and only about 1/2 to 2/3rds of the bedding will make it through the screens. The rest goes back in the bin for more processing.
In the warmer months I can harvest 1/4 the bin each week in a continous operation.
