My worms are trying to escape!! - 2006/01/28 12:11 Help! I just set up a worm bin at home 10 gal, shredded newspapers, crushed eggshells, 2# red wigglers. After 2 days when I went to put some scraps in it, they were all over the bucket cover and on the sides. I scooped them back in, put my scraps in and now am looing for help!
I dampened the bedding, it isn't soaking, it is like a wrung out dish rag.
Please, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re:My worms are trying to escape!! - 2006/01/28 15:50 mjohnson..First thing to do is get them under lights. This will make them go down into the bedding. Next, get some more food(maybe a cup or two) in there. Crushed eggshells will not be something they can consume right now. Put something softer or blenderize some fruits and veggies. This will be something they could get into now. When you start up a bin with just paper, food and worms, the worms have to wait for the microorganisms to break it down for them. If you had some active compost you could put about 2" mixed into the lower part of your bedding. This compost could jump-start things, as the microorganisms are already there. If you got your worms through the mail, they have been jostled and exposed to heat and cold. They do not have the bedding they are used to or the food. I think when you put your worms into the bin, they had an emergency wormy town meeting and decided as soon as it was dark, they were going to find their old home. I am sure they will travel if their instincts tell them "go or die". As soon as you get their environment to there liking, they will not want to go elsewhere. The light on will settle them into their new environment and when they find things to their liking they will say put, without the light.
Hope this helps. Keep us updated.

Re:My worms are trying to escape!! - 2006/01/28 18:50 The light really helped me when I started. My hubby suggested it and boy, did I hate to admit he was right. I used one of those clip on reading lights with a very low wattage bulb. You could also use a night light. I never had any escape (that I know of) and now they are happy as can be. (I know this because I hear them wigglin' and gigglin")

Re:My worms are trying to escape!! - 2006/02/02 06:18 I had the same problem, I found that a couple of sheets of damp newspaper placed over the worm bed solved the suicide attempts.
Best of luck.
