Worm harvester!!! - 2009/04/29 19:56 I have to tell someone that understands my excitement besides my wife! We just landed a jet worm harvester!!! And it cost us mowing 2.5 acres!! It's about 15 years old AND IT WORKS. The electric motor needs a new cord, but it works. I'm so stoked I can't type anymore. Gotta go do the happy Snoopy dance. Peace!!!

Re:Worm harvester!!! - 2009/04/30 15:51 That's awesome man! I know the feeling. Scored my harvester some years ago from a guy who got burned in the B&B. Brand new too. He was so sick of everything he gave it away for nothing and all his beds and worms. Now his son lives next door to me and I mow his yard Arkie's Vermiculture

Re:Worm harvester!!! - 2009/05/01 07:20 It's not too overly difficult to make a small one. There's some good info at http://www.redwormcomposting.com/reader-photos/johns-homemade-worm-harvester/ and you might be able to make some sense of my multi mesh classifier at http://www.arkiegold.com/MultiMeshClassifier.html and adapt it for worm harvesting.

I'm not real sure how well it's going to work yet but I made a bin along the lines of my classifier. The worm bin is actually the mesh cage that will be suspended inside an enclosure with hinged lid and bottom. I'm hoping to rotate.tumble the bin/cage portion every couple of weeks to remove castings, aerate the bedding and harvest cocoons without having to go digging through the bedding. If it works, I'll share pics and a detailed photo tutorial of building it on my website somewhere.

Re:Worm harvester!!! - 2009/05/01 15:16 That was a very cool design, though very complex and it's very evident you are a metal fabricator. Still very impressive. I would like to see it work! John

Re:Worm harvester!!! - 2009/05/01 19:26 I will like to see it work too

Thanks

I did finally get some EF's. Ordered 1,000 cocoons from Blue Ridge Organics and got them today! Lots of unexpected bonus worms mixed in too! So maybe we will see it work soon

Re:Worm harvester!!! - 2009/05/01 22:49 Is there a reason you went with cocoons versus worms? John

Re:Worm harvester!!! - 2009/05/02 08:02 I initially ordered a pound of EF from a worm farmer in Missouri on 4/03/09. They shipped twice and both shipments failed to be delivered by the USPS. I then decided to try another avenue and remembered reading somewhere that when dealing with sludge from sewer facilities it was best to start with newly hatched worms so all they will have ever eaten will be sludge. Changing feed and bedding that adult worms are familiar with can cause problems or so they say. Someone on another forum spoke highly of Blue Ridge Organics so I gave them a try. Arkie's Vermiculture
