 worm bin - 2009/05/21 18:07 I have had several different worm bins for years. I often read that worms will eat their weight in a day. I put about 1 pound of food out in the worm bin for my red wigglers and they are still working on the food. I have more worms than when I started years ago. I have also read that the worms should double in about 2-3 months. No way for me. Now I use a plastic bin with screening on the top and screening on the bottom with it raised so the worms will get air. My question is how can I make this more efficient or what is the best style of homemade worm bin for maximum production and easy harvesting?

 Re:worm bin - 2009/05/21 18:10 P.S. Usually I only feed the worms fruit and veggie scraps except for citrus and onions, etc. Sometimes coffee grounds.

 Re:worm bin - 2009/05/21 23:39 Easy harvesting on a small scale: my new favorite way is from wells worms and using pumpking to herd the worms in. I put a pile of pumpkin wait about 3 days and voila! a pile of worms. Do that about 4 times and you have rounded up most of your bin.
In my opinion, it does not matter what kind of bin you have. The keys are simple: keep the environment right, feed them right and harvest the bin regularly. If I do all this I do double my population every 3 months. Liz aka BigTexWorms

What size and type of bins to you currently have? What type of bedding are you using?

The populaion may double in 2 to 3 months. It may take longer for you to notice because of the small worms that have hatched out.

It sounds like you have plenty of air flow but how is the moisture in the bin?
