 Re:Question? - 2006/02/02 19:39 When I started, I weighed the paper and then measured the right amount of water and I bet these experienced people here tried not to laugh at me. Thank goodness they kept encouraging me. Now that I'm starting my second bin, I shred the paper and judge the water content level by squeezing the paper so it feels like a wet sponge. It is much easier now and I'm enjoying it so much better. I started out using all shredded paper.

I use all shredded paper for bedding in my indoor bins. Coir is good, but I prefer not to buy anything more. When I start a bin I put about a 2" layer of strip cut, shredded paper, mixed with some active compost (if I have it). I put a 1" layer of food, then worms and cover all with a good 3" layer of shredded paper. Keep us updated as you set up Susan Quinby-Honer
