Hacker Proofing - 2006/08/20 12:34
Attention All,
I just read an article on the internet regarding hackers and their little spy bot programs that they unleash on the internet to unsuspecting websites and innocent email victims.
I witnessed the Worm Digest website get hacked last month. In a weird way, it was kind of funny seeing an Anti-War Demonstration Home Page covering up probably the most peaceful website that I browse daily on the internet.
If you read the Mission Statement on the website Home Page, Worm Digest has no business or political affiliation. This means they are like Switzerland. They are neutral. The website is here to help people. It brings information to people to decide for themselves what to do with the information. The forums are filled with people who work together and share information.
I heard through the grapevine, Jamie, the Executive Director of Worm Digest attempted to negotiate through email correspondence with the hackers. Afterall, they left their calling card and locked up his website. He could not have been happy.
I heard he was polite and courteous in his discussion. The hackers from Turkey and Chile were unresponsive. They didn't care. This website was just another medium to get their message out to the masses.
Jamie then decided to bring in his own team, including Scooter. The rest is history. The team quickly fixed the situation (of course, without the hackers permission) and were up and running effectively in no time. I understand they made the proper adjustments so that it would not happen again.
I also noticed when you want to register or email a message in the "Contact Us" section to the Worm Digest administrators that you need to type in letters into a box. I found out later that this is a precautionary measure so not to allow hacker bot search programs to infiltrate the website or the Worm Digest email.
My point is. . . Perhaps there is some truth when you hear you cannot negotiate with terrorists. Or you have to prepare to defend yourself for future attack like the Worm Digest did with their type letters into a box routine.
Everyone is now effected. Even the good guys have to defend themselves.
Thank you Worm Digest administrators for being strong and moving forward. Thank you for being cool enough not to bring the drama to all of your posters and visitors who love to read your articles.
