Re:Kids Program - 2008/02/24 12:54
Right now I have two youth garden clubs that I am 'sponsoring'. One is at my son's elementary school. We meet one day a month for 1-1/2 hours. We have a different topic each month. Sometimes I give the program (worms, wintersowing, planning your garden etc) and sometimes I have someone else come in. We had the county extension agent give a program on bugs that the kids would likely see in their gardens this summer. The other group that I have is at our local community center. We meet once a week for 6 weeks. Pretty much the same as the other but shorter time frame. As far as financing, the community center group charges the kids to join but the elementary group is free and open to all students. I belong to the local garden club and they are very good at giving money for these programs. I really love working with the kids, I'm sure I get more out of it than they do! I'm the youth activities chairperson for the Garden Club of Indiana so I'm really trying to spread the word around here to get more youth programs going. A lot of the adult garden clubs are intimidated by working with the kids but I'm having a blast! Sorry to be so lengthy here!
